Evil Eye
Evil Eye

The belief in the Evil Eye is an ancient and widespread superstition that is believed in many cultures including the Cypriots.

It is believed that the Evil Eye is a negative power we all some more or some less carry within ourselves. If we stare too long at a person, we may inflict damage through this power. It is often totally unconsciously done, but the staring in itself often comes from jealousy or envy, which are perfect channels for the Evil Eye.

In Cyprus, glass blue eye charms are worn to ward against the evil eye. This eye charm can be on a necklace, a ring, bracelet and even hanging off a cars review mirror. Blue stones are also used, since the colour blue is considered a protective colour

The Greek Orthodox Church has recognised the evil eye since the establishment of the faith. The church calls it Vaskania (pronounced Vas-ka-nee-a) and has a special prayer made especially to help cure those who have fallen under the curse.

If a person is suffering from a constant headache, they may start believing that they have been cursed with the evil eye. The first thing to do is verify if it is truly a curse or a physical problem.

Some people believe the way to check if you have been cursed is to put a few drops of olive oil in a cup of holy water. If the oil stays on the surface then it is not a curse by the evil eye. On the other hand if the oil dissolves then it is believed that the person is cursed.

To break the spell a priest must say specific prayers. The priest will place oil as well as water on the cursed persons forehead and hands in the shape of a cross several times.
Then the spell is broken.

The Orthodox Church says that the only things that can really protect you are crucifixes, icons from monasteries or churches and first and foremost true faith.
